A series of highly successful, international conferences on reactive intermediates and unusual molecules were held at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia in 1991, 1994, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016. A series of international conferences (symposia) on reactive intermediates and unusual molecules, now known as ISRIUM, started in 1978 in Geneva (EUCHEM conference on electron deficient reactive intermediates, organized by Charles W. Jefford and Curt Wentrup). Among the speakers in this first conference were Peter Stang, Maitland Jones, Jr., Wolfgang Kirmse, Bob Moss, Oleg Nefedov, Walter Lwowski, Udo Brinker, R.F.C. Brown, Charles Rees, John Cadogan, Mieczyslaw Makosza, and many others. The Heron Conferences form part of the ISRIUM series. Due to popular demand, the Heron Conferences have grown into a regular triennial event. In 2019 we departed from the tradition of holding the conference at Heron Island, holding it instead at Ayers Rock Resort, Uluru, in Australia's red heart. In 2022 the conference will be back at the refurbished Heron Island Resort. Heron Island is a coral key on the beautiful Great Barrier Reef, 70 km off Gladstone, Queensland. Heron Conferences have morning (8-12 am) and evening (8-10 pm) sessions. All participants have all meals together. Afternoons will be free for snorkelling, diving, swimming, sun bathing and other reef and island activities and leisure.
The Heron Island poster sessions late afternoons till sundown are legendary and not to be missed.
The Conference starts at 4 pm on the Wistari Terrace on the day of arrival and finished with lunch on the day of departure.
